On October 24, 2005, the Keys received an unwelcomed visitor by the name of Wilma. The Turtle Hospital did well through the storm itself but by the next morning the water in the Florida Bay began to rise. A 5 to 8 foot storm surge came up and over the islands flooding buildings and covering many areas of the Overseas Highway. The Turtle Hospital became flooded with 4 feet of water seriously damaging the x-ray and surgical room and the tanks in the enclosure where the turtles are housed floated off their foundations and were also seriously damaged.

The turtles and humans made it through the storm with no problems but a very large mess was left to clean up. Unfortunately because of the damage, the Turtle Hospital has had to close its doors to the public for an undetermined amount of time until the facility can be rebuilt and new medical equipment can be ordered and installed.

We appreciate everyone’s well wishes and concern over the last few months. The Turtle Hospital has resumed our rescue and rehabilitation operation as well as our Guided Educational Experiences.
