Trey Gets Hooked

Trey xrayThe newest sea turtle patient is a juvenile Green weighing in at just 7 lbs. Captain Mel Walker and his friend Trey were out fishing for Yellowtail when this tiny Green was inadvertently caught.

The hook was lodged deep in the esophagus and was out of sight to the fishermen. The two decided to call Turtle Hospital staff for help to make sure this turtle could be safely cared for. IMG_3412

Volunteer veterinarians Dr. Connelly and Dr. Mader from Marathon Veterinary Hospital stepped in using an endoscope and tubing to safely remove the hook. After a few doses of antibiotics and monitoring for normal behavior, Trey will be released! We hope he learned his lesson and grows to be a big Green sea turtle, possibly reaching 500lbs. one day!
