Tracking Sea Turtles

“Mr. T,” an almost 200-pound loggerhead sea turtle, crawls into the Atlantic Ocean Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at Sombrero Beach in Marathon, Fla. The adult male reptile was rescued in early February and convalesced at the Florida Keys-based Turtle Hospital following surgeries to remove a fishhook. The turtle was fitted with a satellite tag by Mote Marine Laboratory to track migratory patterns of male loggerheads. FOR EDITORIAL USE ONLY (Andy Newman/Florida Keys News Bureau/HO)

A magnificent adult male loggerhead sea turtle, Mr. T weighed in at just under 200 pounds. Mr. T was rescued offshore of Tavernier, Florida Keys in early February 2019.  Mr. T was floating and had a fishing hook with trailing line lodged in his mouth. Mr. T fully recovered and was fitted with a small transmitter and released in the Florida Keys on May 7, 2019. Data © Mote Marine Laboratory.

St Thomas
Thomas was rescued in October, 2018, 3 miles offshore of Big Coppitt Key, Florida Keys where he was found debilitated and covered in Fibropapilloma tumors.  St. Thomas’ treatment at the Turtle Hospital included five tumor removal surgeries, broad spectrum antibiotics, anti-parasitic medications, vitamins, and a healthy diet of fish, squid and greens.  St. Thomas is fully rehabilitated and tumor free!  St. Thomas was released with a small transmitter on July 19, 2019 as part of Tour de Turtles.

This beautiful 50 pound juvenile green sea turtle was found floating off Vaca Key in March, where she was rescued and taken to The Turtle Hospital. Marcia was treated for floating disorder and is was returned to the ocean July 14, 2023.

Fitted with a satellite transmitter tag, and is part of Sea Turtle Conservancy’s Tour de Turtle program. You can follow Marcia at http://www.tourdeturtles.org
